Listen now (75 mins) | This week we are proud to welcome Jen Shirley - The Uncommon Principal Entrepreneur. Jen coaches kids, parents & educators about social, emotional, and learning skills strategies. Her expertise is in ADHD, behavior, & self-regulation. And Personal Development for kids is at the heart of what she teaches. One thing that stands out about Jen is her strong sense of mission and awareness of the world we live in. On her website, she explains, “The needs of our kids have become more abundant & more extreme. This observation has led me to ask myself some tough questions about how ‘we’ are currently doing things.” Her mission is to build an ecosystem focused on developing kids who stand out, stand up, and make an impact on the world because of what they create or contribute - not what they consume. According to Jen, “There's no place for complacency here.”
I am about 1/2 way through the episode and really enjoying it. I can relate to the description from Sara about the life of an educator and how they look at the concept of time. I thought a lot about the idea of learning to "park" those emotions that will not be conducive to the current situation. While I think that individuals need to learn how to park those feelings, I also believe that there is a responsibility of people to think about when and how they share information. For example, a principal sending out an email at the start of the day that has the chance of being upsetting to the receiver should probably give more thought about when/how to share that information Just because we can easily share information doesn't mean that we should.
This episode really made me think about a lot of things. I actually have some cognitive dissonance going on right now. I love technology, but I also see the drawbacks. I am a digital reader...do I not read as deeply because of that? I am not a paper notetaker...am I doing myself a disservice by not taking notes by hand? What is the best way to use technology in a school setting? This episode brought up more questions for me than answers!
